MaShezee’s new single ‘Unothando’ a festive expression of love

MaShezee is a singer, songwriter and radio presenter who was born and raised in Umlazi, KZN. The songstress is set to release her debut afro-soul single “Unothando” on Friday the 3rd of December.

Like most of South Africa’s greatest vocalists, she grew up singing in the church choir. This led to her first endeavours into the music scene being influenced by the gospel messaging and sound she grew up listening to. “My first love is gospel music, which is a celebration of the love we have for God and the love He has for us, but recently I was inspired to sing about a different kind of love,” says MaShezee.

Her latest single “Unothando” is a sultry love song with a melody that’s hard to forget and easy to sing-along too. A perfect song for the festive ‘wedding season’ that will have everyone dancing and singing along in celebration of love.

MaShezee wrote the song as a way to use words and melodies to encapsulate the love her husband shows her forever. “I was in a place of gratitude for the care and support my hubby shows me, it got me thinking ‘Unothando ulovie wami’! He has genuine love for me, a soft, kind, deep and true love that holds no pretence.” She says. This expression of love lead to her transition from Gospel to Afro-Soul and Afro Pop music.

As a child, when not singing at church or listening to gospel music, she leaned towards sultry love songs from international soulful artists such as Sade and Erica Badu and local stars such as Zonke and Lira. Her latest single is a fusion of her sonic influences from her favourite artists yet her unique voice provides a clear distinction from the rest.

MaShezee is also a Radio Content Producer who also hosts her own show (under her radio name Purity SM) every Saturday morning on popular Durban community radio station Highway Radio 101.5 FM.

“Unothando” will be released on all digital platforms on Friday the 3rd of December.
